10 Questions to Ask Your Wedding Venue Before You Sign Anything

Signing a venue contract is one of the biggest financial commitments in your entire wedding plan. Before you put pen to paper, these are the questions every couple in Nigeria should ask — and the answers that should raise red flags.

1. Is the date actually available?

This seems obvious, but always confirm availability in writing, not just verbally. Some venues overbook and sort it out later. Ask whether any other event is booked the day before or after yours, as this affects setup time.

2. What exactly is included in the hire fee?

Tables? Chairs? Linens? Air conditioning? Security? Generator fuel? Get a complete written list of inclusions. Many disputes between couples and venues come down to assumptions about what was "supposed" to be included.

3. What is the generator policy?

Power reliability is a real concern at Nigerian events. Ask whether the venue has its own generator, whether fuel is included in your fee, and what the procedure is if power goes out. For outdoor venues, ask about lighting backup too.

4. Can I bring my own caterer?

Confirm exactly when you can access the venue for setup and decoration, and what time the hall hire ends. Ask what the overtime rate is — Nigerian receptions famously run long, and being charged per extra hour can add up fast.

6. What is the capacity — seated and standing?

Venue websites often quote maximum standing capacity. For a seated dinner reception with a dancefloor, the realistic number is usually 30–40% lower. Walk the space and ask the manager to show you a floor plan at your expected guest count.

7. What is the refund and cancellation policy?

Life happens. Ask specifically: what percentage of your deposit is refundable if you cancel 3 months, 6 months, or 12 months before the event? Is there a rescheduling option? Get this in writing.

8. Is there a bridal suite or changing room?

A dedicated space for the bride and bridal party to dress, freshen up, and take private moments during the day is enormously valuable. Ask whether this is included or an add-on cost.

9. What is the parking situation?

Ask for the actual number of parking spaces. If it's insufficient for your guest list, you'll need to factor in valet parking or arrange shuttle services from a nearby lot. This is especially important for Island Lagos venues.

10. Who is my point of contact on the day?

The person who sold you the venue is rarely the person running it on your wedding day. Ask for the name and direct number of the on-site coordinator who will be present throughout your event. Confirm this again two weeks before.
