12-Month Nigerian Wedding Planning Checklist
Planning a Nigerian wedding involves more vendors, more family coordination, and more moving parts than most couples anticipate. A 12-month timeline gives you enough runway to book the best vendors and arrive at your wedding day without a crisis.
12 Months Out
Set a realistic total budget and agree on who is contributing from both families. Agree on a rough guest count — this drives every other decision. Decide on the city and general type of wedding. Begin venue research — the best venues book out 12–18 months ahead for December.
10–11 Months Out
Book your venue — this is the most time-sensitive booking. Set your wedding date formally. Begin researching photographers and videographers. Agree on aso-ebi colour and fabric type with both families. Begin your wedding gift registry.
8–9 Months Out
Book your photographer and videographer. Book your caterer — good caterers fill up fast for peak dates. Begin traditional wedding planning: alaga, bride price list, date for Idana or Igba Nkwu. Start bridal wear shopping — custom gowns take 4–6 months minimum. Book your MC.
6–7 Months Out
Book your decor company. Book your DJ or band. Order aso-ebi fabric and distribute to family. Begin honeymoon research and booking. Send save-the-dates to guests travelling from abroad.
4–5 Months Out
Send formal invitations. Finalise catering menu and confirm per-head count. Book hair and makeup artists. Arrange accommodation for out-of-town guests. Finalise transportation plan for wedding party.
2–3 Months Out
Confirm all vendor bookings in writing. Have bridal fittings and confirm groom's outfit. Finalise programme of events. Order wedding cake. Plan souvenirs. Arrange security.
1 Month Out
Confirm final guest RSVP count and update caterer. Confirm all vendor arrival times. Prepare payments for vendors. Assign a day-of coordinator. Schedule final dress fitting.
1 Week Out
Confirm venue access time for decorators. Confirm final headcount with caterer. Brief family members on their roles. Prepare envelopes for vendor payments. Ensure the venue generator is confirmed and fuelled.
