Church Wedding vs Court Wedding in Nigeria: Costs, Process and Differences
In Nigeria, marriage is legally recognised three ways: under the Marriage Act (registry/court), under Islamic law, and under customary law. For Christian couples, the question is often: church wedding or court registry, or both?
What Makes a Marriage Legal in Nigeria
Only a marriage conducted under the Marriage Act and registered with the state government creates a legal marriage certificate in Nigeria. A church wedding alone — without a Marriage Act licence — is not a legally registered marriage, regardless of how elaborate the ceremony. Many Nigerian couples are unaware of this.
Court/Registry Wedding: What It Involves
A registry wedding is conducted at a marriage registry under a registrar. The process involves giving notice at least 21 days before, both parties providing valid ID and birth certificates, two adult witnesses, paying a registry fee (typically 5,000–20,000 depending on the state), and a short 15–30 minute ceremony. Many couples do the registry quietly with close family a few days before their main church ceremony.
Church Wedding: What It Involves
A church wedding includes pre-marital counselling (mandatory at most Nigerian churches, typically 3–6 months), publication of banns on 3 consecutive Sundays, and the ceremony with vows, ring exchange, and blessing. Many Nigerian churches are licensed to conduct legally recognised marriages — meaning the church ceremony and legal registration can happen simultaneously. Confirm with your church whether they are licensed under the Marriage Act.
Cost Comparison
Registry only: 5,000–50,000 total. The cheapest legal path to marriage in Nigeria.
Church wedding: The cost is primarily the event itself. A church wedding with 200 guests in Lagos easily costs 5,000,000–15,000,000+.
Which Should You Choose?
Most Nigerian Christian couples do both: a quiet registry signing before the main church ceremony to ensure legal documentation, then the full church wedding for the celebration. For couples prioritising simplicity or with budget constraints, a registry-only wedding followed by a small reception is perfectly valid.
