How to Choose a Wedding MC in Nigeria — And What They Should Cost
The MC is one of the most underrated decisions in Nigerian wedding planning. A great MC keeps the energy up, manages the programme seamlessly, and becomes a cherished part of the day's memory. A bad MC can derail an otherwise well-planned event.
What a Nigerian Wedding MC Does
A professional wedding MC manages the entire reception: welcoming guests, introducing the couple, managing the order of events (cutting of cake, first dance, speeches, food service), handling last-minute changes, and keeping the energy of the room from start to finish.
MC vs Alaga: The Difference
For Yoruba traditional weddings, the alaga iduro and alaga ijoko are specific traditional MC roles from the groom's and bride's families. These are different from a general wedding MC. Alaga are specialists in Yoruba traditional ceremony — they know the protocols, the songs, the prayers. They are not interchangeable with a general events MC.
What to Look for
Energy without chaos — a good MC reads the room. Bilingual capability in English and Yoruba, Igbo, or Hausa. Experience with Nigerian weddings specifically — the currency spraying culture, multiple family groups wanting microphone time. A proper programme review session before the day.
How Much Does a Wedding MC Cost?
Entry level: 50,000–150,000. Newer MCs or those primarily known in smaller cities.
Mid-range: 150,000–500,000. Experienced professional MCs in Lagos, Abuja, and major cities.
Premium: 500,000–2,000,000+. Well-known MCs with significant social media presence.
Before You Book
Watch a video of them MCing a full reception, not just a highlight clip. Speak with at least two couples they have worked with. Confirm availability for both your traditional and white wedding if needed. Agree in writing on the programme, timing, and any topics that are off-limits.
