How to Plan a Nigerian Wedding on a 3 Million Naira Budget
A 3 million naira wedding budget is modest by Lagos standards but entirely workable — especially in smaller cities — if the decisions are made deliberately. This guide shows exactly how to allocate it across a real Nigerian wedding.
Set Your Non-Negotiables First
Before allocating any money, agree on the two or three things that matter most to you. For some couples it is great food. For others it is the photography. Once you identify your non-negotiables, protect that budget first and cut everywhere else.
Sample 3 Million Allocation (150 Guests)
Venue: 300,000–500,000. Catering: 750,000–900,000 (5,000–6,000 per head). Photography: 250,000–350,000. Decor: 250,000–400,000. DJ: 100,000–200,000. MC: 80,000–150,000. Bride's hair and makeup: 80,000–150,000. Wedding cake: 60,000–100,000. Invitations and printing: 30,000–60,000. Generator and miscellaneous: 100,000–200,000. Contingency (always keep 10%): 300,000.
Where to Save Without It Showing
Guest count: dropping from 200 to 150 saves 250,000–750,000 in catering alone. Day of the week: a Friday or Sunday saves 15–25% on venue. Month: January, February, and September are off-peak and negotiable. Aso-ebi: limit to immediate family only. Flowers: artificial florals have improved significantly and cost a fraction of fresh.
Where Not to Cut
Do not cut on food quality — under-fed guests is what people remember. Do not cut on photography — you will have the photos forever. Do not cut on the generator situation — a power failure is worse than modest decor.
