What to Look for in a Nigerian Wedding Caterer Before You Sign Anything
Food is the single thing your wedding guests will remember and discuss most. Bad food — or not enough food — becomes the defining story of the day. Choosing the right caterer is one of the most important decisions in Nigerian wedding planning.
Experience With Your Guest Count
A caterer who regularly handles 100 people is not automatically capable of executing for 400. The logistics of cooking, transporting, and serving at scale are genuinely different. Ask specifically: what is the largest event they have catered, and how recently?
A Tasting Session
Any professional caterer worth hiring will offer a tasting session before the wedding day. Decline to book any caterer who refuses to allow you to taste the food. The tasting should include the actual dishes on your menu, not showcase items.
Serving Staff Ratio
Food service at a Nigerian wedding is as important as food quality. A reasonable standard is one serving staff member per 20–25 guests. Confirm whether serving staff are included in the quoted price or billed separately.
Equipment and Setup
Confirm whether the caterer brings their own chafing dishes, serving ware, and cooking equipment, or whether you need to hire these items. An all-inclusive caterer who brings everything is simpler to manage.
Backup Plans
Ask what happens if the lead cook falls ill. Ask what happens if a key ingredient is unavailable on the day. A professional caterer has answers to these questions. One who looks surprised by them has never had to think about it.
The Contract
The catering contract should specify the exact menu, the guest count the price is based on, the per-head rate, the number of serving staff, service hours, payment terms, and the policy for changes to guest count closer to the day. Do not pay in full upfront — a deposit of 30–50% is standard.
